Author
Austin Phelps
Austin Phelps (1820–1890) was an American Congregationalist minister and theologian whose prolific writings on biblical interpretation and homiletics significantly shaped nineteenth-century Protestant thought. As a professor at Andover Theological Seminary and author of influential works including The Relations of the Bible to the Civilization of the Future, Phelps articulated a vision of scriptural authority that engaged contemporary intellectual currents while defending evangelical orthodoxy against emerging historical-critical methods. His scholarly contributions to the theory and practice of preaching established him as a leading voice in American religious education during the antebellum and postbellum periods.
