Charles Backus

Charles Backus (1753–1820) was a Congregationalist minister and theologian whose sermonic works, including The Anniversary Election Sermon, exemplified the intellectual currents of late eighteenth-century New England religious thought. His contributions to American theological discourse reflected the transitional period between Calvinist orthodoxy and emerging liberal religious movements that would characterize nineteenth-century American Protestantism. Backus's published sermons remain significant primary sources for understanding the relationship between religious authority and civic responsibility in the early American republic.
