Author
Charles Thomson
Charles Thomson (1729–1824) was an American classical scholar and biblical translator whose most significant contribution to theology was his monumental translation of the Septuagint into English, published as *The Old Covenant, Commonly Called the Old Testament* (1808). Working in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Thomson undertook this scholarly project to provide English-speaking readers direct access to the Greek translation of Hebrew scriptures, thereby influencing Protestant biblical scholarship and interpretation during the early American republic. His translation work demonstrated the enduring theological importance of the Septuagint tradition and reflected the broader Enlightenment commitment to making classical and religious texts accessible to educated lay audiences.
