Daniel Huntington

Daniel Huntington (1805–1884) was an American Congregationalist minister and theologian whose writings engaged nineteenth-century debates over religious orthodoxy, social reform, and the proper relationship between ecclesiastical authority and civil society. His work, including An Intolerant Spirit Hostile to the Interests of Society, exemplified the moderate evangelical perspective that sought to reconcile traditional Protestant doctrine with progressive social concerns during the antebellum period. Huntington's theological contributions reflected the broader New England intellectual tradition of adapting Calvinist thought to address contemporary questions of religious tolerance and democratic governance.
