Author

Jeremy Belknap

Jeremy Belknap (1744–1798) was an American Congregationalist minister and historian whose theological writings, including his notable *Election Sermon*, reflected the intellectual currents of late eighteenth-century New England Protestantism and its engagement with Revolutionary-era political thought. As both a clergyman and founding member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Belknap exemplified the scholarly minister of the early American republic, synthesizing religious doctrine with historical inquiry. His sermonic and historical works contributed significantly to the development of American ecclesiastical historiography and the articulation of Protestant theology during the nation's formative period.
