Author
John Winthrop
John Winthrop (1588–1649) was an English Puritan leader and the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, whose theological vision profoundly shaped early American religious and political thought. His sermon "A Model of Christian Charity," delivered aboard the Arbella in 1630, articulated a covenantal understanding of community based on mutual obligation and Christian love, establishing the intellectual foundation for the Puritan "city upon a hill" as a model of godly commonwealth. Winthrop's synthesis of Reformed theology with practical governance made him a central figure in the transatlantic Puritan movement and a formative influence on the religious and social character of New England.
