Simeon Howard
1733–1804
Simeon Howard (1733–1804) was a Congregationalist minister in Boston, ordained in 1767 to succeed Jonathan Mayhew as pastor of the West Church, where he served until his death. His occasional sermons to the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company (1773) and to the Massachusetts legislature (1780) argued from Scripture and natural law for the right of a people to defend their liberty, and are among the clearest statements of the Revolutionary-era clergy's case for defensive war.
