Matthew Poole. London Nonconformist, ejected 1662. Synopsis Criticorum (1669–76), five folio volumes surveying the whole of European biblical scholarship in Latin, is the most comprehensive critical commentary of the Puritan era. Annotations upon the Holy Bible (English, completed posthumously 1685) became the standard Reformed preaching commentary for two centuries and the direct basis for Matthew Henry. Died in Amsterdam.
