New England Election Sermons

The complete printed record, 1661–1884 — every annual election sermon preached before the General Courts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Plymouth, New Hampshire, and Vermont, indexed and linked into the library.

From the 1630s, the colonial governments of New England opened each year's legislative session with a sermon — a public theological argument on the duty of magistrates, the covenant of a Christian commonwealth, and the moral conditions for political flourishing. These were the most weighty occasional sermons in the Anglo-American tradition, often the first published work of New England's leading divines. 220 of 417 are now searchable in full text below.

Source for this index: R. W. G. Vail, "A Check List of New England Election Sermons," Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, October 1936 (PDF at AAS). Bibliographic data — author, year, title, jurisdiction — is reproduced as fact; Vail's commentary, prose annotations, and editorial apparatus are not reproduced here. Where Commonplace has imported a digital edition of a sermon, the row links into the library.

Sermons that aren't yet in the library are typically rare imprints held only at specialist archives (American Antiquarian Society, Boston Public Library, Connecticut Historical Society, Yale). Where a digital edition exists on Internet Archive or the Text Creation Partnership, Commonplace will incorporate it as our coverage of post-Revolutionary American Protestant occasional sermons expands. If you have access to a specific sermon and would like it imported, the contact form on the about page reaches us directly.
